Retro Motor Swaps (LS, Hemi, Coyote)

At Apex Performance, we specialize in retro engine swaps. This means putting a modern full-injected engine and transmission package neatly into a vehicle that usually doesn’t offer these options. We can put a modern platform (like adding an LS to a Mustang) or put a 5.0 Coyote in an F100 pickup. Perhaps even add a 6.2 Hellcat into a Dodge Dart. Whatever the swap, we can facilitate and accomplish it. These swaps entail more than putting in motors and transmissions.

  • Building custom driveshafts and cross members.
  • All core transmissions are rebuilt to the specifications of the engine HP level, as discussed in the initial project consultation. This includes mild-built transmissions to fully-built transmissions with all the billet hardware and trans-brake options. Converters are all specced to the cam profile and finial gear ratio the customer plans to run (accounting for tire size).
  • All core engines are torn down, cleaned, and inspected. Afterward, we bore, hone, polish, and balance them. We replace all bearings and rings before installing new oil pumps, and custom grind cams with supporting hardware. (This includes the pushrod and mod-motor setups.)
  • We prefer long-tube headers for their scavenging advantages, but select makes and models require shorty or custom-built headers pending application.
  • Motor-Swap-20200420_170219-1200
  • Installation of new radiator and fan/shroud and transmission coolers.
  • Regearing ends built for 2 and 3-speed transmissions (4, 5, 6, 8, and 10-speed swaps require different gearing).
  • Most older model swaps require us to add a standalone fuse/relay block for fusing the fans, fuel pumps, dash electronics, or any other electronics added for safety, ensuring all circuits are in spec.
  • Stock gauge integration, Dakota dash, similar plug-and-play units, or 3D printing bezels for custom tablets and touch screens for gauge and data display.
  • A/C integration or standalone vintage air units.
  • Older carbureted vehicles need complete fuel system overhauls, starting at the tank, to support the high fueling demands of fuel injection fuel systems.
  • Depending on the vehicle, most add gears and several hundred HP over the stock configuration—this means upgrading the brake system from drums to disc being done in most older vehicles. You need front and rear disc brake conversions to help these vehicles slow down safely.
  • Lastly, these vehicles will be Apex Tuned.
In conclusion, Retro engine swaps entail a lot more than just the engine and trans. Modern EFI engines need adequate cooling, electrical supply, proper fueling, and digital or analog instrumentation for the swap to be functional. This also demands comforts like air conditioning and safety concerns like braking. Adding power plants to underpowered vehicles also necessitates we ensure safe handling.
